A letter from the Consul:
Thank you for visiting the homepage of the Beta Pi Chapter of Sigma Chi at Oregon State University. Sigma Chi is one of the largest national Fraternities and is currently represented on 221 university campuses throughout the nation and in parts of Canada.
Sigma Chi was founded on June 28, 1855 at the University of Miami, Ohio. The founders instilled the ideals of friendship, justice and learning as the foundation of the fraternity. Along with stressing the importance of diversity among members, the founders strived to attain men of good character, students of fair abilities, with ambitious purposes, a congenial disposition, possessed of good morals, having a high sense of honor and deep sense of personal responsibility.
As for Sigma Chi at Oregon State University, we were chartered in 1916 and have been living at the current location since 1948. We have always had a strong presence on campus and currently consist of 68 active members, in addition to at least 25 pledged freshmen we plan on having when the recruitment process has concluded. Our Fraternity participates in nearly every Intramural or IFC sports team on campus including: football, basketball, softball, soccer, golf, hockey, rugby, tennis, water polo and more. Last fall term our house’s football team took 2nd in the Fraternity Competition, and during winter term our basketball team finished 3rd. Every fall term we promote our national philanthropy to raise money for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The week long event called Derby Days is the largest on campus and last year raised $14,000 for Doernbecher.
At Oregon State University we pride ourselves on having brothers who participate in various activities, which build character and enable our house to continually be well rounded. We have wonderful relationships with all sororities on campus and have functions or house dances with an assortment of them. Our fraternity also enjoys traveling together throughout the school year, as well as during the summer. We take annual trips to Whistler Ski Resort, Sun River, Lake Shasta, the Oregon Coast, and numerous camping locations.
Besides all the extracurricular activities that our members participate in, the house’s number one goal is to maintain a high level of academic learning. Although we have fun socially, we address that our ultimate goal is to graduate from college as well-rounded gentlemen of the highest caliber. We placed 2nd overall last fall term in grades with a 2.96 GPA out of the 23 Fraternities on campus. The house has adopted several academic programs, such as Study Brothers that generate a continued excellence in the classroom and strengthen fraternal bonds.
From personal experience I can honestly express, that by surrounding myself with motivated senior role models when I was a freshman, has only aided in my maturity and diligence as our current president. My hope is that all freshmen men would choose to join a fraternity. How better or faster are you going to make 100 close friendships that you will have for the rest of your life? I encourage you to look at all the other aspects of this website to learn more about our Sigma Chi chapter at Oregon State University.
In Hoc Signo Vinces,
